Don’t believe we control water but work with it and as a beginner either go to wet or to dry. It’s a challenge know even best artists deal with it.

How everything comes together with the final wash is incredible and a lesson: never give up on your painting before you added all your layers. You never know if it will turn out great in the end. A lot of time a final glaze can reveal or fix values or tones.

I think he is probably the greatest watercolorist in the game right now although I am a huge Buffalo Kaplinski fan, but I wish Joseph would paint with less gray tone and a little bit more color pop

How did you buy it? How much was it? Can u provide any info that would help others to get it also? I find it strange that Joseph doesn’t have any books to purchase besides his prints or original art that not everyone can afford. Fine art Snub or bad pr/marketing on his part. But great artist… shame no one else can get these books otherwise.

@@smoothatwork they don't print a lot. They only had 100 copies sold and I was able to get a copy as I have connected with Lisa since my last book purchase in 2020 during pandemic. I don't think the books are meant to be sold for business, but it was more of a way to get some copies to art enthusiasts and was mostly in the circle of artists. Maybe it has to do with Z not wanting resellers, as he did not like his first book Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in watercolor selling at crazy prices now. sorry you did not get a copy.

Richard Schmid has a similar style using oil paint. Every artist is influenced and takes a bit of technique and qualities from another. Contrasting hard lines vs soft is one of Schmid’s focus. And it’s reflected in Joseph’s work with added atmosphere and washes that watercolour provides.

Plein air is useful for observing colour intently, which photographs tend to flatten. Trying to paint watercolour is practially a non starter. It's either too hot, too windy, raining, the list goes on. The last time I attempted to paint outside the paint dried virtually as soon as my paintbrush touched the paper. I find it best to sketch, make colour notes, take a photo and together with your memory of the scene complete a painting inside, where the environment and light remain constant and optimum. Love your videos Eric...

Wow, spent months trying to find out how to paint so that it looked nice and the way I wanted it to. Cannot count the videos that I watched without understanding my problem. Then I watched this video and all of a sudden everything is clear. You tell everything in a way that makes it easy to understand. Of course I have to practice a lot to get as good as I would like to be though now I have fun. When knowing why and how to paint, it is such a pleasure. Also when making a mistake - I now know what I did wrong and can correct it. Thank you soooooo muxh. In my opinion you are the best teacher that I have ever seen and heard.

After many years making videos and trying all kinds of lighting ....can I give my ideas on lighting.......ok so your light is directed on to your painting but also catching the rest of the darks around your board and your hands ok //////so it is better to have your full room, itself lit up as much as possible ,,,light boxes work to degree ,,but remember to make you. room lights bright as possible not the paper ......work outside you may see what I mean ...........

When it comes to situations like this painting where cars are needed, but the space is very small....Is it possible to utilize a rough-'sidestroke'....kinda like how Chei Chung Wei can use a sidestroke to establish an entire city of lights in a night time painting?
